Thanks Lil Andy for your country singer anecdotes from the big city. I was particularly touched by this latest column because not having had my own TV since 2002, I have often been involved in the kind of conversations related above. Thank you for making me realize that I have at times been a bit arrogant in saying ‘no I don’t have a TV’ thus effectively killing innocent small talk. I will be nicer in the future. I admit that I get a kick of shocking people who cannot imagine life without a TV of their own. I often get offers from people who want to donate a TV to my cause because they don’t understand that I live quite a full life without a TV. That being said, I think that McLuhan’s quote is also insightful, because even though I don’t have a TV, there are enough people in my life who have and watch TV to keep me all up to date about what’s going on in TV. For example, my family gets together every Sunday to have dinner and then we watch TV as a family. Also, my neighbours got me addicted to watching Lost and taped it for me when I could not watch it live. My point is, even if I pretend that I am cool because I don’t have a TV, in reality, TVs are ubiquitous, so all of us voluntary-non TV owners should get off our high horse.
