BABBLE OF THE BANDS #10: Les Savy Fav
Whether tearing his clothes off, pouring a full beer down an unsuspecting audience member’s gullet or diving across a Slip ‘n Slide coated in Jack Daniel’s, the live antics of Les Savy Fav frontman Tim Harrington have become the stuff of legend. Happily, the New York band brings loads of musical appeal on top of their show-stealing lead singer’s frolics, with a driving and danceable post-punk-indebted sound they’ve been peddling since the mid-‘90s. Fun fact: bass player Syd Butler is also the founder of Frenchkiss Records, releasing albums by the likes of The Hold Steady, Dodos, Ex Models and more. We tracked down Les Savy Fav for a Q ‘n’ A.

When your grandmothers ask, how do you describe your music?
We describe it many ways: Rock music or Loud, like Elvis, but only the sexy parts, or Alternative, or Post Post Punk-Indie-Artcore with a hint of No wave.
When was the last time you played or visited Montreal? Any memories?
I was just up there for a friends birthday. I had an AMAZING brunch at Sparrow on St. Laurent. Looking forward to returning there if I have time. We all like Schwartz's smoked meat with a hint of mustard, too.
What have you guys been up to lately?
We wrote this record called Root For Ruin - check is out. It's pretty cool, but I'm not sure my Granny would like it.
What’s the one thing you always bring with you on tour?
I bring my computer/phone. It's called a blackberry. I know! Funny name for a computer. We also bring our instruments. We seriously try and tour with as little as possible as it's much easier to keep track of it.
Who are you looking forward to seeing at POP this year?
I would love to see a band fronted by a female that's not Metric.
What are you currently obsessed with?
Hockey. Montréal is actually my second favorite team. First being the Washington Capitals... yes, it' does sting.
What’s your favorite kind of pop?
I am a sucker for Justin Timberlake... or are you talking about soda? Coke then.
When you’re not making music, what do you do to relax or unwind?
Try and read anything -- it's hard with two kids -- or sit on the couch and watch Madmen with my lady.
3 albums you have on heavy rotation in your tour van:
I have been listening to a Canadian band called the Arcade Fire - Suburbs. They are pretty cool, have you heard of them? They are pretty off the radar.
other records... Local Natives, Hot Snakes.
SEE YOU GUYS SOON!
Les Savy Fav play October 1st at Little Burgundy POP Loft.
