BABBLE OF THE BANDS #6: The Luyas

in

Montreal's Luyas are the sort of bitter-sweet confection that gets all over your fingers, stuck in your teeth, and, of course, stuck in your ear.  The subtle majesty of Pietro's French Horn playing is matched by Jesse's preternaturally dazzling singing style, resulting in a swirling, heady pop galaxy that's thankfully, decidedly un-carnivalesque.  At once, this is music that is richly textured, sonically adventurous and alternately discordant and angelic.

When your grandmothers ask, how do you describe your music?
I tell them I'm not entirely sure, and quickly ask them of their new boyfriends to diffuse my cowardice and unambition.

Why is being a musician in Montreal awesome?
Because it never snows here.

What’s your favorite place to hang out or eat in Montreal, and why?
On my bed, because it is a place entirely of my own curation, where things out of my control can happen.

What are your favorite local bands?
Colin Stetson is hands down the most incredible musical force I've ever witnessed on a solo instrument.  Not enough people know.  Avec Pas D'Casque is my favourite band, because they have a song in which they sing: "Dommage que tu sois pris, j'embrace mieux que je parle". Leonard Cohen is also pretty good.

Who are you looking forward to seeing at POP this year?
I'm looking forward to seeing the looks on people's faces in the mornings after the big parties, and how the cafés all fill up with people who look like they're on vacation.  I'll be one of them.

What are you currently obsessed with?
My favourite artist in Montreal is Katie Ward.  She is a choreographer who even a layman like me, who knows nothing of dance, can know to worship.   Her work (especially her recent piece, Rock Steady) is bafflingly articulate, and strings together all these things that perplex and beguile most people daily.  It's thick with god and sex and death and fumbling.  Her dancers are amazing too.  I am in love.

What’s your favorite kind of pop?
The kind that sneaks up on me and explains to me something I didn't know that i already understood, all the while making me want to kiss and dance and wear pretty things.

When you’re not making music, what do you do to relax or unwind?
I go to work.  Nothing is as relaxing as knowing that you've been working.

3 albums you have on heavy rotation in your tour van:
I will tell you the answer to this very special question if you first give me a tour van.

The Luyas play POP Montreal on September 30th at Sala Rossa
