BABBLE OF THE BANDS #8: Buke & Gass

in

New York duo Buke & Gass take their name from a pair of Frankensteinian musical instruments of their own creation. In the words of band members Arone Dyer (a she) and Aron Sanchez (a he), the buke is “a self-modified six string baritone ukelele” and the gass is “a guitar-bass hybrid.” On top of these jimmy-rigged devices, they also add a plethora of foot-stomping percussion, effects pedal manipulations and Dyer’s lilting voice, which has earned her comparisons to everyone from Beth Ditto to Tanya Donnely. With their rich, dynamic sound and explosive live shows, you'll be searching for the (non-existent) extra members onstage. Yup -- all that noise comes from two.

Listen: Your Face Left Before You - Buke & Gass

When your grandmothers ask, how do you describe your music?
Arone: Like a Benny Goodman tune done entirely by two people.

When was the last time you played or visited Montreal? Any memories? If you’ve never played or visited here before, what are you looking forward to?
Arone: Haven't been, unless you count a short visit as a kid in the wintertime.  I'm looking forward to just being there, seeing the city, visiting with friends.  We've met a lot of great people from there so it's always nice to see where good people come from.
Aron: I visited 5 years ago, mostly to walk around and eat.

What have you been up to lately?
Arone: Unfortunately, not a whole lot.  We've both been working!

What’s the one thing you always bring with you on tour?
Arone: Starting this tour, my bike.

Who are you looking forward to seeing at POP this year?
Arone: I started reading through your list and i didn't find any group i WASN'T looking forward to seeing.

What are you currently obsessed with?
Arone: Shipping container houses.
Aron: Barn-like structures

What’s your favorite kind of pop?
Arone: You mean soda? ginger brew. Or if you meant music: the kind of samba that my neighbor blasts while he washes his Mustang with fire-hydrant-siphoned water.  That's pretty popular around here.
Aron: Asha Bosle bollywood soundtracks

When you’re not making music, what do you do to relax or unwind?
Arone: A glass of rose, to start.
Aron: Build or fix something.

3 albums you have on heavy rotation:
Arone: Sleep's Holy Mountain, 16 Most Requested songs of Rosemary Clooney, Arab on Radar.
Aron: Fripp & Eno - No Pussyfooting, Vivaldi Four Seasons (Fabio Biondi with Europa Golante), The Fucking Champs - III

Buke & Gass play POP Montreal on October 2nd at Little Burgundy POP Loft
