BABBLE OF THE BANDS #9: Deerhoof

in

Since the release of their debut long player The Man, The King, The Girl in 1997, San Francisco's Deerhoof have cultivated a signature blend of cute and crazy. Known for the nursery rhyme-style sing-song vocals of hyperactive frontwoman Satomi Matsuzaki, drummer Greg Saunier's spastic imagination on a surprisingly stripped-down kit, and the knotty guitarmonies of the band's duelling axe-men John Dietrich and their latest recruit Ed Rodriguez, they sound like no other band in the world. With ten full-lengths to their name, a blizzard of seven-inches, splits and EPs, plus tours with Radiohead and The Flaming Lips, the 'Hoof show no signs of slowing anytime soon. To help preview their highly-anticipated appearance at POP 2010, we caught up with Greg Saunier for an interview.

Listen: Fresh Born - Deerhoof

When your grandmothers ask, how do you describe your music?
My grandmothers write our music.

When was the last time you played or visited Montreal? Any memories?
Halloween 2007 with fiery furnaces - looking forward to not having my costume self-destruct in the middle of the first song...

What have you been up to lately?
Almost got a new record done.

What’s the one thing you always bring with you on tour?
I always bring drumsticks but never enough

Who are you looking forward to seeing at POP this year?
All my friends' bands : Liars, Danielson, Les Savy Fav, Xiu Xiu, Holy Fuck, Marnie Stern, Women, and Shonen Knife; and then some of the other bands : Timber Timbre, Bear In Heaven, Menomena!, Buke & Gass, Budos Band, Immolation, Wovenhand, Gotan Project, Swans, The XX, Atari Teenage Riot,Van Dyke Parks,Tom Tom Club, Mary Margaret O'hara, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, Mahala Rai Banda, Karkwa, Pink Skull, Scout Niblett, The Luyas, Radio Radio, Random Recipe, Jacob & Francis, Clare & The Reasons. Basically everyone but Deerhoof...

What are you currently obsessed with?
I haven't told her yet, so I'm probably not telling you just now.

What’s your favorite kind of pop?
Real mountain pop

When you’re not making music, what do you do to relax or unwind?
I like the implication that normally i relax and unwind by making music... if only that were true. Anyway, I don't know, winding down is not a skill i have learned so well.

3 albums you have on heavy rotation in your tour van:
We don't have a tour van... we just rent a minivan. Last time we were on tour, a month ago, all we listened to was our new record. I had John's laptop plugged into the stereo and i was mixing the whole time. It's a great way to work actually...

Deerhoof play POP Montreal on October 1st at La Tulipe
