If you met Sigríður Níelsdóttir in the street, you’d never guess that this adorable, virtuous Icelandic grandmother has recorded 59 albums and written more than 600 songs, all in the comfort of her home. And that’s not the half of it: she launched her impressive musical career at the tender age of 70! Filmmakers and musicians Kristín Björk Kristjánsdóttir, Orri Jónsson and Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir – who have clearly studied their Gondry and Gilliam – followed Níelsdóttir for seven years, and prove that she’s a cult heroine for good reason. Using Super-8, 16 mm, collages and other techniques, Grandma Lo-fi thumbs its nose at youth-obsessed culture with touching charm and creativity.
