“All Women Are Bitches” was not a chart topper, but it represented a significant thread in Toronto’s musical tapestry thanks to the all-female art punk band Fifth Column. Former band members recall the 1980s queer art punk scene and their progressive efforts to unite music, film and zine culture to challenge conventional art practice, gender roles and femininity. Archival films from the influential alt-cinema/production collective the Funnel complement present day interviews with Caroline Azar, Beverly Breckenridge, GB Jones and Bruce la Bruce. About G.B. Jones:
G.B. Jones is not only a Toronto legend but an internationally recognized pioneer of the queer punk scene. Though perhaps better known for co-founding the band Fifth Column, for her Tom Girl drawings and for her collaboration with Bruce La Bruce on the seminal queercore zine JDs, she is also a thrillingly talented Super-8 filmmaker whose mischievous shorts include Troublemakers (1990) and The Yo-Yo Gang (1992) as well as her 10-years-in-the-making feature The Lollipop Generation (2008). In addition to her appearance at POP Montreal, G.B. Jones will also be in town to launch the new book Féminismes Électriques at La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse, Friday Sept. 21 at 6pm.
