dispatch from Katie Thompson
Last night was one of those busy nights where I found myself running
from venue to venue trying to see as much as possible. I started off
at the Portuguese Association where I caught the Half Japanese
documentary, The Band That Would Be King. Pretty silly stuff. As much
as I wanted to stay and actually see Half Japanese, I took off and
headed to Club Lambi to see the Luyas.
When I got there, Feuermusik were playing this really sweet stripped
down experimental jazz stuff with just a saxophone and some buckets
for drums. The Luyas were impressive. In fact, the whole time I was
watching them I kept thinking that I should have paid more attention
when they played Fringe Pop over the summer. I was really digging the
vocals and the bell music they did near the end of their set. Very
beautiful stuff.
This is kind of sad; I lived in Philadelphia for a year and I had
never seen Man Man. For the past two years, friends have been ranting
and raving about how fucking crazy Man Man are live but for some
reason I just hadn't gotten around to seeing them. I'm even a pretty
big fan of their last album but for some reason I just kept missing
them. Over the summer, I met Ryan (Honus Honus) at a friend's studio
and he was such a nice dude that I said that's it; I swear I'm going
to see Man Man before the end of the year.
Man Man didn't disappoint. Those dudes came out and gave a hundred
percent; they played loud and hard, banged on shit, screamed, and went
crazy. The crowd followed suit.
Afterwards, I poked my head in at Balattou and caught the end of
Woodhands' set. Pretty much everyone was dancing and dripping with
sweat.
My last stop for the evening was Club Coda where the We're Marching On
show was still going strong. Folks were still dancing and drinking and
the band started to sound louder than they should have. I couldn't
stop yawning. I had run out of energy......which was fine because it
was late. I walked back to where I was staying and passed out
immediately.
