Kids POP Feature: Sam Purdy

Samantha Purdy is an embroidery and textile artist living and working in Montreal.

Specializing in cross stitch, she creates wall hangings and accessories of people and places.

She will be leading a paper doll making workshop during the Kids POP, Don’t Stop Party, Sept 23rd at the Montréal Chinese Presbytarian Church.

When did start getting crafty:

Crafting started early for me. I remember rug hooking, making Christmas tree ornaments, building things out of paper, and always having a sense that you could be creative with the objects around you.

What are your biggest inspirations:

Inspirations include vintage children’s book art, vintage craft books, folk art (including the hand-made gems I find every now and then thrift  shopping), city life and childhood memories.

What are you up to now:

I’ve been working on larger scale embroideries lately, experimenting with cloth size to magnify the stitching. I’ve also been rug hooking and patchwork quilting. Currently I’m getting ready for Puces Pop! Expect pot holders with machine embroidered bowls of soup and plastic canvas plant decorations of watering cans on popsicle sticks.
