Pop Montreal's Symposium is like no other: programming is artist-driven, interdisciplinary, and reflective of our city's diverse and lively culture. Over four days, we will feature panel discussions, keynote interviews, listening sessions, as well as hands on workshops and round tables. All events are presented in a casual, yet academic setting, with an emphasis on skills-building, audience participation, and different cultural perspectives.
The main objective of the Symposium is to empower, educate, and inspire by offering uniquely intimate access to the ideas and forces at the heart of today's music world.
GREATEST HITS: VOLUMES 1-6
Such esteemed guests as Patti Smith, David Byrne, Ian MacKaye, Clash producer Sandy Pearlman, nuero-scientist Dan Levitan, and Saul Williams have come to share their experience and expertise on everything from the D-I-Y ethic and social responsibility, to publishing rights and changing realms of listening and community, music cognition and much more.

Charging into its seventh year, the Symposium is branching out to represent all festival segments. In addition to music topics, programming will cover themes central to Puces Pop, Film Pop, Art Pop, and Kids Pop, the latter taking the form of a special all-ages series.
Look out for these highlights of 2008: sampling, copyright and "ownership" debates in Canada and Jamaica, women in Hip-Hop, improvisation theory and practice, Rap in Africa, D-I-Y home recording and circuit bending day!, live filming of VBS Soft Focus interviews...plus access to on-site experts...

Check out highlights like Cramping My Sampling (free admission) Tanna Hall 1 - 2:30 with Buck 65 and Skratch Bastid, or split yourself in two to check out the free Pop Workshop on International Festivals and Labels with peeps from SXSW, VEGA, and 6 more (same time, same building, room C201).
Enjoy our Patti Smith keynote address at 4:00 in Pollack Hall, then stumble into the SAC sponsored cocktail. Wake up early to enjoy "Fast Cheap and Out of Control" new music business models at 9:00 a.m., and don't miss out on a demonstration of NEW MUSIC INSTRUMENTS being developed by the CIRMMT labs (10:30 a.m., 12:00 and 1:00)!
