SPECIAL GUESTS JOHN LEE OF PFFR, IAN SVENONIUS + HOW WE PLAYED THE REVOLUTION, PERSISTENCE OF VISION AND MORE!

Screen shot 2013-09-04 at 2.18.05 PMPOP Montreal’s early evenings have just gotten a little bit better: the always evolving Film POP is stealing the show and will bust out of the box even further in its 2013 edition.  The not-to-be-missed inspired programming will be shown across three different venues, The Phi Centre (407 St-Pierre), The Cinémathèque Québecoise  (335 Maisonneuve East) and the Film Box (POP Quarters, 3450 St-Urbain). To make film hopping easier while everyone is popping, for the first time, festival-goers will, have the opportunity to purchase a Film POP pass for only $45!

This year, Film POP gets supernatural with sidebars on ground-breaking animation and psychedelia, an ambitious slate of high-concept installations (including a commission project through which we commune with the dead!), hands-on workshops and live expanded cinema events in addition to a salacious roster of the newest music documentaries! Moreover, a slew of notable special guests will also grace POP Montreal’s film segment, including indie renegade director Allison Anders (Border Radio; Gas; Food Lodging; Sex and the City; the L Word), Wonder Showzen co-creator and member of the art collective / electro-rock band PFFR, John Lee, the legendary frontman of Make-Up and Nation of Ulysses, as well as the host of VICE’s talk show Soft Focus, Ian Svenonius, not to mention video/performance artists Peter Burr and Kathy Rose!

On the film side, much of the programming is worth devouring, starting with the Canadian premiere of How We Played the Revolution (Giedre Zickyte | Lituanie 2011 | 69min.), which documents the incredible story of the band Antis, who many credit to have sparked the Lithuanian independence movement in the mid-1980s. Under an oppressive Soviet regime, Antis cleverly fronted as a Soviet-endorsed music festival and toured around the country with other bands and supporters to spread the message of liberation.

Another must-see is the special 35 mm screening of Wonderwall (Joe Massot | UK 1968 | 85min. | Eng. v. Fr. sub.), a head-tripping masterpiece featuring a shimmering, sitar-laced instrumental soundtrack by former Beatle George Harrison. Wonderwall tells the tale of an eccentric scientist (Jack MacGowran) who stumbles upon a secret window into the sex life of gorgeous nymph (and longtime Gainsbourg muse) Jane Birkin.

Finally, Film POP is very proud to be presenting the Quebec premiere of Persistence Of Vision (Kevin Schreck | Canada / UK / USA 2012 | 83min.), the untold story of the greatest animated film never made. Striving to make the greatest animated film of all time, visionary and acclaimed Canadian animator Richard Williams (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) toiled for more than a quarter of a century on his masterpiece — only to have it torn from his hands. Filmmaker Kevin Schreck has woven together mind-blowing animation, rare archival footage, and exclusive interviews with key animators and artists who worked with Williams on his ill-fated magnum opus to bring this legendary story to the screen.

Those are some of the highlights! More programming to be discovered along with schedule and ticket information below.
