How to Talk to Girls at Parties
Director: John Cameron Mitchell
United Kingdom/USA, 2017
John Cameron Mitchell (Shortbus, Hedwig and the Angry Inch) is back with How To Talk To Girls at Parties, a delirious sci-fi/punk-rock/queer musical, adapted from Neil Gaiman’s Hugo-nominated, Locus Award-winning 2006 short story of the same name! Starring Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp and Nicole Kidman, the film was revealed at this year’s Cannes film festival, and expands considerably from the source material and following graphic novel: Mitchell makes the source material wholly his own with every kinky costuming choice, every psychedelic detour, and every confrontational directorial decision, culminating into a genre-bending coming-of-age tale with a comic-book sensibility; a beautiful ode to difference and the fundamentally rebellious act of not wanting—or caring—to fit in, doubling as a fond recollection 1970s Britain— with musical contributions from Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart, to boot.
