Film POP presents:
"Carte Blanche" to Dead Obies
New Jack City (dubbed in Québec!)
Director: Mario Van Peebles
When they launched their inaugural mixtape, Collation Vol. 1, in the spring of 2012, Dead Obies couldn’t suspect they’d strike a record deal, launch two Polaris-nominated albums and perform more than 200 shows across the province. Shit, they were even sent to Paris su’l bras! Looking back, the New Jack City samples on that first mixtape (that is, of the film’s infamous Québec dub, featuring, among others, Marc Labrèche) were clearly prophetic of the style that the group would perfect along the way: a clever mix of trappings from Reagan-era hip-hop, with a delirious Quebecois twist that leaves no purist unruffled. Five years have since passed and we’re stoked to invite you to an anniversary screening of this crown jewel of New York gangster cinema, directed by the great Melvin Van Peebles, dubbed in Québec, and hosted by Dead Obies following the final show of their Gesamtkunstwerk tour at the Metropolis! (Yes Mccan).
