Other Music, one of New York City’s most beloved record stores, shuttered its doors in 2016 after 20 years. Defiantly located less than a block down from Tower Records, the East Village store famously dealt in closely-curated independent, rare, and experimental music. It was also a hotbed for the city’s indie scene at the turn of the millennium. Documenting the shop’s final days, Other Music features interviews with several New York-based artists and shop regulars, including writer Lizzy Goodman, Regina Spektor, and members of Animal Collective, Vampire Weekend, the National, Interpol, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and TV on the Radio. Also featured is archival footage documenting moments from the store’s many in-house concerts, including a downright legendary performance by Gary Wilson. Come to pay your respects, but stay for the bounty of eclectic recommendations the store’s employees can’t help but share on their way out the door.
