Proudly selected as Film POP 2018’s official closing film, Shut Up and Play the Piano follows the journey of a singular artist from his Canadian home to the Berlin underground of the late ‘90s and finally to bourgeois concert halls worldwide. Montreal’s own Jason Charles Beck, known internationally as Chilly Gonzales, is at once an electro-rap superstar, a virtuosic pianist, and a Grammy award-winning composer. However, he is above all a showman. Fluidly moving from genre to genre, Gonzales has inspired and collaborated with the likes of Daft Punk, Feist, Jarvis Cocker, and Peaches, all of whom find their way into this effortless-seeming portrait of the hardest working megalomaniac in show business. Punctuating the film with clips from an interview between Gonzales and writer Sibylle Berg, Jedicke incorporates archival material and dramatized sequences to delightful effect. Presented in conjunction with two POP-produced piano concerts by Gonzales this coming October at Montreal’s Maison Symphonique.
