Art POP is celebrating the unique art communities of Montreal and beyond for its 15th year! With more than 60 individuals exhibiting and performing at this year’s edition, Art POP is excited to share works from a diverse group of artists and practices in both traditional and alternative art spaces across the city.
This year, Art POP is interested in addressing public experiences of romance, desire, and sexuality. We want to explore these fundamental human traits and the way they interact with physical and psychological spaces, objects, and other humans. One such exploration is physical queer space and the erasures of sexual contexts that can occur as these spaces are frequented over time, which is the main theme of our exhibition in Studio Rialto.
Cruising, sexuality, and romance will also be the main subjects of a special panel discussion co-hosted by POP Symposium, which will demystify the history and reality of queer public life.
This spirit is also manifested in Art POP's 6th Annual Community Collaboration Project, which pairs local youth with artists in a summer workshop. This year, artist Skawennati worked with youth from Kahnawá:ke and LOVE Québec to create digital avatars in Second Life, whose portraits will inhabit the Rialto complex.
