Marilina Giménez | Argentina, 2018 | 83 min | Spanish, English Subs
Co-presented by Rock Camp for Girls and Gender Non-Conforming Youth Montreal
After six years of playing bass in the three-woman rock outfit Yilet, Marilina Giménez, a fixture in Buenos Aires’ riot grrrl scene, has put down the axe and picked up the camera. In her first outing as filmmaker, Giménez offers a probing and affectionate look at women in Argentina’s musical subcultures, documenting awe-inspiring performances and asking pointed questions regarding the current status of female artists in a sexist and continually male-dominated industry. The experiences relayed by the film’s participants will no doubt strike a familiar chord with Montreal audiences. Striking too is the breadth of musical styles covered in the film, as punk, rock, reggaeton, pop, and electronic women-led bands are shown contributing to the city’s rich and thriving landscape. Una banda de chicas is a testament to women in music as well as an argument for more musicians-turned-filmmakers.
