If you've ever attended POP Montreal, you know that with it comes the turn of seasons: brisk fresh air that smells like the falling leaves, back to school and a new wave of first year university students flocking the city in excitement. All of this action calls for a promising recipe for a non-stop party festival. Though we are normally used to getting first signs of autumn during the festival and generally rejoice to the idea of putting on our jean jackets for the first time in 3 months, 2015 had different plans for us. A bustling Parc avenue was still enjoying the last days of summer weather in late September as She-Devils took the stage in what resembled a glass box suited for an edgy life-size doll for tweens.
The duo consisting of Audrey Ann Boucher and Kyle Jukka formed in the winter of 2014 and immediately created lots of buzz. Children of Montreal's Torn Curtain, they started off solely with playing shows before eventually releasing a retro-pop four song self-titled EP this past January.
On this mid-festival afternoon of treating hangovers before another round, kids race by on their scooters and Audrey waves to friends and familiar faces passing by who remain anonymous like its a choreography, until she breaks out in smile. The video and yet to be released song evoke hopefulness all around, from the three note guitar loop and cry of strings to the lyrics "Midnight, I think about all of the things I would say if I could. In the morning, I still haven't found a way to tell you how I feel". The reflecting trees of next spring on the glass window mesh against blue sky and the pair's faces. You can really feel that Audrey and Kyle are running on the same frequency - laughing as though on cue and complementing each other in the creation of their reverb filled sounds. A true sense of the communal support that exists in this city that can sometimes feels like a village and that, like She-Devils, so many bands thrive off of is wonderfully put on display.
