Poland isn't the easiest place to make independent music events happen, but we can't grumble that there is nothing going on here. We have lots of people for whom it is not all the same.
One of those people, who do care about good sounds in our country, is Front Row Heroes collective. Incessantly from 2009 they have worked to show that we have a choice and we are not restricted to only listen to bland bands that we hear on commercial radio. The last 6 years were extremely busy and intense. We had the opportunity to witness in Cracow and Warsaw such great bands as: Sunset Rubdown, Handsome Furs, Basia Bulat, Polvo, Molly Nilsson, No Age, Dirty Beaches, Health or Iceage.
Once in a lifetime… no David, once in a year FRH organizes one special event – Green Zoo. The idea of the festival was born together with the Basia Bulat’s concert in Cracow. Also, the name of the event was taken from the title of her cover of a classic Polish song from the 60’s “W zielonym zoo”. Since 2011, the foundation has managed to invite Lower Dens, Moonface, Socalled, Ben Caplan, Johny Foreigner, DVA, SchnAAk, Phedre, Mikrokolektyw, Circuit Des Yeux for the festival. Green ZOO is an occasion to meet with friends in your favorite music places, an excuse to spend all night long talking and a unique chance to hear something new.
In fact, we have already started the 5th edition of Green ZOO at the before party with Screaming Females and Kaseciarz. The main part of the event takes place between 22nd and 24th May. After these three days we look forward for two additional concerts in June: Buke & Gase with Kubattera, co-presented by POP Montreal and Zs with Złota Jesień.
While checking our line-up, I want to especially recommend three bands to you. Representatives of magic brutalism – Alameda 5. Kuba Ziołek and his friends inspired by sci-fi classics recorded over the 80-minute release. If you follow these rhythmic landscapes, you should immerse in other Milieu L'Acéphale collective’s projects. For people who adore unconventional and unpredictable sounds there is salvation in avant-garde messiah - Wilhelm Bras. Under the alias hides Paweł Kulczyński who experiments with a wide range of electronics taking advantage of the made by his own hand modular synth rack. I want to come back to guitars and focus your attention on the band Złota Jesień (Golden Autumn). On their cassette "Girl Nothing" they blend raw, dirty noise rock with dreamy shoegaze. Just imagine fusion of Sun City Girls, Slowdive and Sonic Youth.
I hope that you are at least a little curious. Come to Cracow and continue the story of Green ZOO Festival with us.
