Hello folks! Noah Bick from Passovah here.
On the eve of the sixth annual Non-Denominational Passovah Holiday Party (a.k.a. the Passovah Holiday Lovedown), I thought it would be appropriate to share some insight about producing an event that features one million acts playing one after another. This year's edition features 23 local acts playing 15 minute sets + one dj. Thankfully I am going into this event with years of experience. Throughout its eight year history, Passovah has produced its share of shows that use this hectic format.
There are a number of advantages to doing a show of this nature. Not only is it fun to have a huge amount of folks from different parts of the music scene in the same room, but having many acts on the bill also means that there isn't as much pressure on musicians to draw people to the show. The room often feels great before the audience even starts to arrive! These sorts of shows are a great way for anyone curious about the local music community to discover the scene at an accessible cost (pay what you can), and for artists to check other folks' work which can also lead to future collaborations.
The major difficulty in doing a show like this is running it on schedule. I make sure to tell artists 400 times beforehand to maintain their sets within a super limited time range – for instance, artists playing the holiday show cannot play more than 15 minutes. An event like this also means that whoever is running the show should NOT be doing the door! They need to have access to the sound person / side stage at all time in order to communicate with the artists. I’m also mindful to make the event as accessible as possible. Bar Le Ritz is located next two metro stations and is accessible to wheelchairs. The event is pay what you can w/ nobody will be turned away at the door for lack of funds.
All proceeds to this year’s event will be going to Action Réfugiés Montréal. We’ll also be collecting non-perishable and canned goods for a local food shelter.
