21st Century Vaudeville
As a kid, I used to dream about running away to join the circus. Later on, the circus began to seem less likely but the desire to create the kind of spectacle I dreamed of remained. For ten years running, with the help of a great cast of volunteers, family and friends, ShazamFest has allowed me to be a sometime ringmaster, sometime performer in a festival incorporating the best parts of my dream.
A lot of what we’ve accomplished is due to my parents, who rejected city life to build the organic paradise we call the Shazam Farm. It was a great place to grow up, where friends from all over the world would come to discuss (and argue about) love, art, politics and rock n’ roll around the kitchen table.
Located near Ways Mills, Quebec, ShazamFest has been entertaining ever larger crowds in an environmentally sustainable way that is the envy of other festivals. Our mission has always been to bring the best acts for our neighbors and the campers from all over who descend on the farm every year. With shows by Mononc’ Serge, Bloodshot Bill, Bernard Adamus, The Quebec Bluegrass Project, WD-40, We Are Wolves, Jah Cutta, Dubtribe, Radio Radio and many others we’ve had a great time so far.
This year, we’re celebrating Shazamfest X from the 9th to the 11th of July. What could be more fun than camping out next to the Niger River and checking out performances by Les Deuxluxes, Socalled, Buck 65, The Damn Truth, Face-T, LaboKracboom, The Eastern Townships Wrestling Association, Mike Goudreau, The Blue Mushroom Sirkus Psyshow, Capital Tease Burlesque and many more?
With its cavalcade of wrestlers, burlesque dancers, acrobats and other freaks and its soundtrack of diverse music from Quebec, Canada and beyond, ShazamFest is Vaudeville transported to the 21st century!
