In my role running Because Music UK, I oversee promo, marketing and digital strategies for our acts and in addition I’m solely responsible for the A&R and image for our UK repertoire.
The how-to of A&R is all about immersing yourself in new music and becoming a curator, long before anyone pays you to do so. If you'd like to become an A&R scout, become your own scout, start a small label, or club night, or website, select the artists you think are great and book them, release their music, write about them.
If you've got a knack for it you'll soon discover that the artist you tipped early on go on to be big stars. People in the industry are often bogged down with the day-to-day running of their companies and don't have the time or enthusiasm for attending gigs and discovering new music in the way they used to. Young people with a hunger to get ahead are what drive the business. If you start your club night, site or label and begin discovering new talent, the business will discover you and before you know it you'll be hired.
