The music industry, like most creative industries, can be quite treacherous to navigate - especially for a young transplant in a strange city. Whether you're looking for help releasing your music or looking for a job at a music company, perseverance is key. It is an industry full of big personalities that requires thick skin and a good attitude. Above all, nurturing your relationships with those around you and doing so genuinely is truly invaluable.
What I am most grateful to have found throughout my short career is a committed professional mentor who is able to openly raise issues and tackle challenges. Equally important as a drive to learn, is finding somebody invested and willing to teach. My boss and I’s strong mentoring relationship is built on thorough collaboration, honest communication, and a powerful will to want to help each other. We are fully committed to each other’s professional development and though I am mostly learning from him, he is respectfully and excitedly open to new ideas and ways of doing things. That is what I offer to bring to the table and what makes a truly successful mentoring relationship.
I've been asked how one goes about finding this special kind of relationship. With the wealth of knowledge at our fingertips these days, research the companies you love and admire. Do your homework - know their origin and catalyst, why they exist, why they're special, and know the people who were responsible for passionately building them into the thing you love. Don't be afraid to send a cold email, and always know your worth. Explore all the ways you can help collaborate, and always remain sincere. Go to a show alone, introduce yourself to people, and be willing to put yourself out there.
My boss wants his vision to continue beyond what he alone can do for the label. It's important to a mentor that they can work with someone who understands their vision and the potential of that vision to persist, change, and most importantly grow. A prosperous mentoring relationship provides crucial insight into all aspects of one's professional career, and it is something worth seeking in this industry especially.
