If you haven't heard the waves being made by Wake Island yet, now's the time to get on board. Philippe Manasseh and Nadim Maghzal are a Lebanese duo tightly knit in Montreal's independant music scene who are bringing their uplifting synth rock dance tunes to the next stage. The pair will be playing a special show with Jae Tyler presented by POP Montreal during Beautés Soniques Festival in Namur, Belgium. Following that, they embark on a few dates in Lebanon, Cyprus and Dubai before returning home to Montreal. We caught up with them in three questions:
In your opinion, which song off your album is the most underrated gem and why should we binge listen now?
That would be a track called "Spring Break 2019 (I Feel Nothing)". The production of this track was really crazy and it resulted in possibly one of the darkest most original pieces of music we ever made. If you want to get a taste of what's coming on our next album (and in the future of the world), this track will put you in the right mood.
You've played quite a few gigs in EU in the past year. What do you take away from these trips and what is your favorite item to bring back home with you?
We really had a great time on our POP Off tour in Europe earlier this year. It was truly a great opportunity to present our latest album/show to many different audiences across the UK and a couple of European cities as well. What was special about this particular trip is that it felt like we were discovering brand new places with other friends from our Montreal community, we were touring with our friends Lesley (L.A. Foster), Marie-Hélène, Erla & Christian (Foxtrott) as well as Sarah & Dan from POP. In a way it felt like Montreal was "invading" so many towns and spreading good vibes. We played a lot of fun shows and festivals but the highlight for us was our time in Berlin where we got the chance to play a show and spend 6 days partying hard. This trip was eye-opening on so many levels and the memories of it are the favorite thing we brought back with us, that and a bottle of rare Boomsma liquor that was offered to us at a show in Leeuwarden (Netherlands).
You will be playing in Cyprus, Lebanon and Dubai in November. How do you prep for these shows and how is your live performance received?
We're really stoked for these shows! We love playing in Lebanon, we always have a great time there with our families & friends and the shows are usually dope. It will be our first time playing in Cyprus and Dubai though, we have absolutely no idea how that's going to unfold which is why we're pretty excited. We're preparing a new show featuring a mix of songs from the album as well as brand new tracks that we're working on at the moment. We get to play long sets at most of these shows which is something we enjoy doing, it allows us to make people dance.
