Art POP launches its 2016 programming!
Art POP, the visual arts segment of POP Montreal, is back with another balls-to-the-wall, highbrow-meets-lowbrow edition! Bigger than ever before, this year’s Art POP presents the work 49 of the most exciting visual artists working today, from Montreal, across the U.S. and Europe. From September 21-25, 2016, Art POP takes over the headquarters of the POP Montreal International Music Festival (POP Quarters) and other satellite locations across town.
Art POP is thrilled to welcome renowned American multimedia artist and art world enfant terrible Kalup Linzy for a one-night-only exclusive performance, blending live singing and provocative, hilarious videos exploring race, gender, sexuality and soap operas. Linzy has exhibited and performed around the world and features in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Studio Museum in Harlem. Art POP will also receive Brooklyn-based artist and musician Jayson Musson, known for his Youtube alter ego Hennessy Youngman, who will share a career-spanning artist talk and presentation of new work.
Art POP brings video art to the silver screen! After successful editions in New York, L.A. and Miami, Feelings Film Festival comes to Montreal with a new theme: sex! This 90-minute showcase of emerging media and video art, curated by Chloe Wise and Adam Levett, features 20 artists and will take place at Cinéma du Parc.
Other highlights include a new painting, ceramics and video installation by the multi-talented purveyor of pop Seth Bogart; a group photography exhibition (about food!) curated by Maya Fuhr, entitled Figuratively Full; and a site-specific sound installation by Montreal’s own Adam Basanta, newly commissioned with support from Canada Council for the Arts.
Finally, the Biennale de Montréal pre-games with Art POP to present the first Montreal iteration of Automobile, by Beirut artist Joe Namy. The internationally acclaimed performance will bring a fleet of modified cars and their souped-up sound systems to Nun’s Island (yes, you read that right). And for the third year in a row, POP Montreal teams up with LOVE (Leave Out Violence) Québec to present a brand new work projected in the Quartier des spectacles, created by 10 youth in collaboration with artists Frances Adair Mckenzie and Leyla Majeri.
