Making music is fun. There are a lot of people out there making music. Especially now that you don’t have to cough up hundreds of pounds/euros/dollars/cryptocurrency to get it recorded. Some of the financial barriers have been removed from music production, which is great. But it does mean there is LOADS of music out there.
To stand out, it’s important to build a culture around what you do.
Social media gives you a perfect opportunity to position yourself in a world you want to be part of, while highlighting what makes you different. Yes you can share your songs, but there is so much more you can be doing. If you are consistently posting links to things that express your interests and opinions, people start to get a picture of you outside of your music. Who are your favorite current artists? Post their songs, tag them in your posts (maybe they’ll check out your music). Who did you grow up listening to? Share this stuff, it tells a story of where you’ve come from. Reading a good book? Tell people about it! Been to a great art exhibition? Let people know about it, tag the gallery and the artists! Make a monthly playlists of things you’ve been listening to and share it. Been to a new venue? Spread the word! Read a news article that’s important to you? … You get the idea.
It’s very easy to start building a culture around yourself without just posting your own songs.
