Labour Lobbying in Music

Rialto Hall

Gratuit | Free

Employees of the major indie label Secretly Canadian have recently unionized, sparking questions throughout the music industry about the labour lobbying power of artists themselves. If artist representatives have labour protection, shouldn’t artists have similar systems to rely on? What social impact can artists have by leveraging their lobbying power as a labour force? Using historical examples like the cultural boycott on South Africa in the ‘60s and the Comedy Store strike of ‘79, this panel will consider the value of musical work as labor, and will explore the uses of performer’s unions for touring and recording artists in 2021.
