Jeru the Damaja (born Kendrick Jeru Davis), also known as D. Original Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where the everyday events around him became the inspiration for his rhymes.
Jeru introduced his unique style—described as “hardcore conscious”—to the hip-hop audience with “I’m the Man,” a track featured on Gangstarr’s 1992 album Daily Operations. In 1993, he cemented his place in the hip-hop world with the release of the now-cult classic single “Come Clean,” taken from his legendary album The Sun Rises in the East. Jeru the Damaja was hailed as the saviour of hip-hop due to his honest and unfiltered critique of the state of hip-hop music.
