pure pulp

Winnipeg, MB
pure pulp is Sam Sarty’s solo project, exploring textural soundscapes from landscapes and found sounds, looping voice memos, thrifted keyboards, bass, guitar, vocals and casio drum machines. Inspired by Yo La Tengo, The Books, Broadcast and John Fahey’s american primitive movement, she also experiments with incorporating minimal guitar arrangements with matching vocals. Working as a projectionist in Winnipeg, Manitoba for over 10 years, Sarty created pure pulp to accompany images of prairie life. The project was dreamed from film scores and ambient moments in movies, an effort to bring visuals to ears. pure pulp’s music has scored various films including scoring a National Film Board produced short “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” (2024) and Ryan Steel’s “Fort Garry Hotel” (2025). pure pulp has an improvised edge when performing live, opening for avant-garde composer William Basiniski in 2024; their songs incorporated a live arrangement of overlapping casios, trombone and vocal looping. Sarty also plays music in her bands Living Hour and Veneer. She has her debut EP “arch above your head” coming out in Fall of 2025. “i heard you say a sentence, but you said it towards traffic instead of me”.
