S. Bejba Designs
Sabrina Bejba is a jeweller, visual artist, and art facilitator. She is a settler of Ukrainian and Italian descent, who grew up and lives in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal).
In 2011, Bejba began collecting used spray caps to remember certain murals and artist friendships from several Montreal graffiti and street art festivals. This ongoing collection has transformed into a jewelry series of rings and necklaces made from sterling silver and re-purposed spray caps. The beauty of the used caps is that each one is unique – they are caked on with different layers of coloured paint. Bejba cuts and shapes each cap and then coats them in resin so she can attach them to a sterling silver ring or pendant that she also hand made out of silver. But there is a twist – literally! The caps on the rings twist off and are interchangeable. A design that Bejba created to offer customers a unique opportunity to collect multiple caps of different colours and from different artists/festivals. Most of the caps are categorized by which artist donated them. This allows Bejba to credit the graffiti writer/street artist and promote and celebrate their work as well, with each piece.
Bejba’s goal with this series is to create wearable art that celebrates the artists and festivals who work at keeping art accessible to the public. By using repurposed materials, Bejba opens up the possibilities of what deserves to be precious and cared for. Through her jewelry and work as a facilitator, Bejba’s goal is to build on community connections and inspire creative ways of re-interpreting the everyday objects around us.
