Sophie Marisol
Sophie Marisol is a Philadelphia-born multidisciplinary artist, and is currently based in Tiohiá:ke/Montréal, where she’s called home for 9 years. She embraces site specificity, eco(intersectional)feminisms, and memory-making as central elements of her work.
Her art balances playful tragedy and intimate storytelling, exploring moments of magic through the mediums of memory, voice, poetry, illustration, radio, sound, immersive installation, and interactive experiences. Sophie’s work is driven by curiosity & community-building, always seeking the right mediums to convey a story or impart a feeling. She investigates how to create work which quickens the breath, makes memory, and activates shared space. Her work is a testament to the interconnectedness of people, place, time, space, and the environment.
She has worked in independent media through Community and Campus Radio for over a decade. Previously, she worked on live radio shows at Edinburgh University’s FreshAir Radio, and for Philadelphia’s WURD 96.1FM. Now, she works at CKUT 90.3FM / ckut.ca as the Partnerships Coordinator. Driven by a station mandate to provide a «mic to the mic-less,» she collaborates with grassroots organizations, as well as local festivals and community initiatives to promote and broadcast local events, and get meaningful voices on-air. Since 2018, she has been a member of ffiles radio, which airs on CKUT and n10.as radio, an intersectional-feminist collective (depuis 1996), a paralleling media project to artist-run center Ada X.
